TRASH ORCHESTRA

Create the unique sounds of a Trash Orchestra with some recycled trash! Children sit in a semi-circle, with crossed legs, on the floor.

  1. Demonstrate how a conductor conducts 4/4 time.
Beat #1: bring your hand straight down.
Beat #2: move your hand to the left to form one end of a lying down figure 8.
Beat #3: move your hand to the right to form the other end of a lying down figure 8.
Beat #4: move your hand to the center of the 8 and bring it up to the starting point.
  2. They count 1-2-3-4 as you conduct. Instruct them to first clap on beat #1, then all sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" as you conduct and they clap on beat #1. Repeat, doing the same thing for beats 2, 3, then 4. Pass out the instruments, emphasizing the "arms up like a conductor" signal for silence, to give directions. They must put their instruments in front of them on the floor without playing them while you instruct each instrument group what to do.
  3. Instruments for a group of 30, which can be stored in a garbage bag:
Bottle drums: 15 -- 2 liter plastic bottles without lids
Cymbals: 5 -- pairs of tuna cans, only one end open
Guiros: 5 -- large juice cans with ridges, both ends open, + 5 wire whips
Maracas: 5 -- plastic spice or peanut butter jars filled with fish tank gravel or something else that makes a pleasing sound
  4. Pass out the drums to the children on your left, the tuna cans to the middle, and the juice cans and plastic jars to the right.
  5. The drums beat on beat #1. Everyone sings "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
  6. Next, shake the jars and rub the whips over the ridges in the juice cans on beats #3 and #4. I point to them on #3, which signals them to come in on time.
  7. Finally, rub the backs of the tuna cans together. I hold up one finger of my left hand when I want them to brush the cans across each other, then two fingers of my left hand when they are to swirl the cans together around in a circle.
  8. Everyone sings and plays together to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
Row, row, row your boat brush cans across each other
Gently down the stream brush cans across each other
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily swirl cans together around in a circle
Life is but a dream. swirl cans together around in a circle
